Where is the beauty?
I looked up specific terms today for beauty. I first searched:
beauty standards america
and got this fantastic explanation and this video:
but when I do a search for
beauty standards african americans
All I can find is how demeaned they have been over the years, how undermined beauty has gotten, pages and pages about plastic surgery for ethnic women to make them look better (iow NOT ethnic), and all the things you can do to un-ethnicify yourself (ie straighten your hair).
It is saddening to me to see how degraded ethnic women's beauty has become in this country.
I can even find PICTURES of most other cultures, but when it comes to African Americans, I see videos of dejected young women in tears or angry because society has said they aren't beautiful!
Asian standard compared to American
I have a hard time looking myself in the mirror. I am a mixed race woman who searches and searches for people who "look like me". If I deconstruct a picture of my own face and show you how it's not the color of your skin that defines your background, you would see what I mean. My thinner nose, high cheek bones, slight eye slant, thinner lips, all tell the story that I am not just African American. I can't just pull up a picture of a black woman and say SHE looks like ME.
I did find a very good informational page about the original standard of beauty which I think you should read.
